License exceeded using RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol)

Have you ever tried to RDP to a Windows server and received the message “Terminal server has exceeded maximum number of allowed connection”?  This is because by default you can only have a max of 2 concurrent connections…BUT…there is a little known feature that allows you to logon using the console session.

Here’s how:

  • Open the command prompt (Start->Run->type cmd and hit enter)
  • type mstsc /v:servername /console (replace servername with the server name or IP of the server)
  • Hit enter
  • You are now connected using the console session

This is a very useful command and has helped me various times!

Now if you try this and someone is logged into the console session.  You can actually log them out if you have administrator access.
