My bro called me up the other day and asked why he couldn’t open a .docx Microsoft Word file. After some investigative work, it turns out he didn’t have Office 2007. Anyways, I guided him to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en ..this is the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack forWord, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.
Why did I guide him here?….because any version of Microsoft Office prior to 2007 doesn’t support .docx file extensions. Honestly, who knows what .docx stands or why Microsoft changed the default file extension. What does matter is that you can open and modify .docx files without having to purchase Microsoft Office 2007…which saves you at least a few hundred $$$$. If I recall correctly, this compatibility pack only supports Office 2000, XP, and 2003.
Or better yet….maybe you can tell your buddy who sent you the .docx to send the file as a .doc file instead and then you don’t have to worry about the compatibility pack in the first place.
