Microsoft Outlook Attachment “Cannot create file” error message

Had a user call and complain….seriously….they were PISSED

Somehow they were not able to save or open an email attachments in Outlook 2007. They kept receiving the error below

Cannot create file: filename.extension. Right-click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder.

I Google’d the error and came across a fix from Microsoft’s that worked for this situation.  As ALWAYS …be careful when modifying the registry…if you don’t feel comfortable…then you don’t do it….simple as that.  Also, I am not responsible if anything goes wrong.  This solution might not work for everyone but it worked for me.

Outlook 2000 Users

  1. Start->Run->type “regedit
  2. Go to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security
  3. In the right pane, double-click OutlookSecureTempFolder
  4. click Modify on the Edit menu and type “c:\temp0\” in the Value data: field
  5. exit registry
  6. Restart your computer

Outlook 2003 Users

  1. Start->Run->type “regedit
  2. Go to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security
  3. In the right pane, double-click OutlookSecureTempFolder
  4. click Modify on the Edit menu and type “c:\temp0\” in the Value data: field
  5. exit registry
  6. Restart your computer

Outlook 2007 Users

*do the same as Outlook 2003 users except you need to start in the below registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security

    Hi, this all worked except I couldn’t find the “Modify” in step 4. (I am using 2007).
    So instead, I copied the address of the folder into the Start/Run address box and that took me to the actual temporary files. From there I deleted the temporary files and restarted Outlook. This solved my problem.
    I was only having trouble opening one specific file from a daily email I received. All other attachments were opening fine. From another post I believe it has something to do with the number of files with the same name that you can have in the temporary folder.
