Daily Questions 2/5/2008 – Mystery guy gives Iowa couple $100k

I was browsing the net this morning and came across this article where some guy went into a bar and gave this couple a $100k check.  Well….that’s not exactly how it went down.  Basically…the guy goes in….makes conversaion with the couple and hands them a blank check.  He asks them to write any amount on that check.  Thinking this guy was either nuts or not serious…they write $100,000.  The guy signs it and says he’s good for it.  The next day they cash the check and it clears!!!  woW wOw Wow WOW

Now that’s what I call generosity!!  According to the couple, the guy gave them two conditions.  First, they need to use the money to build/purchase a new home.  Second, they need to name their next child after him.  I’m not sure about you, but I think I might do that.  Unfortunately, the gentlemans name was not disclosed, and we will never know the fate of their next child.

My questions to you are:

  1. If someone were to give you a blank check and asked you to write any amount…how much would you write?
  2. How many of you would attempt to cash the check?…..not knowing if the check is valid or not
  3. And finally……How many of you would follow through with the two conditions?…(1) build/purchase new home..and  2) name your child after him)

    1) I would have written $500,000 as a minimum!
    2) I would for sure cash the check….heck…it doesn’t hurt to try….or does it?
    3) I would follow through with the first part…but I’m not sure about naming my child after him.

    1. I would write the check for $500,000; it may be a test and I wouldn’t want to be too greedy.

    2. I would deposit it and make sure I didn’t spend the money until 30 days later. As long as the money’s there; I’d only have to pay a $6 fee for the rubber check.

    3. I own a home already, I wonder if paying off my current home would count. Otherwise, I’d still follow through; we’re running low on space. I’d follow through on the first child promise as well; hopefully the guy’s name isn’t Richard Burns or something like that.
