Active Desktop Recovery – Object doesn’t support this action

I had a problem on my desktop for the longest time and I finally decided to look into it yesterday.  My desktop had this white background and it said Active Desktop Recovery.  Also, there was a button that said Restore my Active Desktop

But here’s the thing, every time I clicked it, a message box would appear like the one below.

Here’s FIX #1

  1. Open an explorer window (open My Computer for example)
  2. Tools
  3. Folder Options
  4. View
  5. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files
  6. Now do a search for desktop.htt…it should be on your C: normally
  7. Delete any desktop.htt files you find (there could be more than one depending on how many user profiles are on the machine)  They should be located in Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
  8. Close all windows you have open
  9. Now reboot your PC..Windows will recreate desktop.htt for you and it should work!

oops…I almost forgot….go ahead a place a check back in Hide protected operating system files

If the above doesn’t work, try FIX #2!

  1. Go to Run, type regedit and hit enter
  2. Go here HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\SafeMode\Components
  3. Select the value DeskHtmlVersion
  4. Select the Decimal radial button
  5. Change the value of 272 to 0
  6. Most of the time it might take a few seconds for your background to appear and other times…you might need to restart your computer.

Have fun!

as a Windows user myself, i encounter problems like this once in a while. and oh, man… it’s so frustrating when this problem occurs. this is perhaps the best advantage of Linux over Windows. in Linux, script errors and virus attacks seldom happen. in fact, i haven’t encountered one.

Brilliant. I have just spend the last 5 days trying to resolve the same issue, and thought that I had finally found a simple solution with your instructions Piyush. Other sites were suggesting a complete Repair XP Install. Your solution to delete the Desktop.htt file did not work for me either. However, the subsequent info to change the regedit value as well has worked. Thank you so much.

    Hi,

I have been having the same problem for days. I tried the first set of directions removing desktop.htt. This did not work for me and my other issue is that when this all happened it took off all the liks on my start menu. I don’t have a run link anymore. Does anyone know how else I could try to fix this issue. I may be beyond fixing it myself and have to bring it to a PC repair man.

    Thanks for any suggestions

I would be very careful using it if I were you. If something were to be deleted that shouldn’t be deleted, you’re computer might not properly work anymore. Just Google it and do some research.

I have the same problem. i have been trying everything i know to solve the problem. Originally i thought i had 2 desktop. and i was trying to find out how to just make it one. Because when i turn on the computer while it’s booting up, i see the desktop with it’s background, the task bar at the bottom with the necessary buttons, the only thing i don’t see are the icons i have on the desktop. then i get this other desktop screen comes up with all the icons and a white screen telling me to restore active desktop recovery. i just tried the first method, nothing happens, i tried the regedit method. i don’t know what to say, i still have the 2 desktop screens, the first is the same as i describe earlier and the second screen is blue with only the icons in the background. can you help me. i’ve tried everything.

but the problem appear again on the next boot, so i have to change DeskHtmlVersion key again again and again everytime my computer run.

So i created small program to set DeskHtmlVersion to Zero Decimal and you must make it run every time my computer start and make DeskHtmlVersion keep to Zero Value.

I upload this file to rapidshare so download it guys…
    http://rapidshare.com/files/183577437/DeskHtmlVersionToZero.rar.html

    just follow this step :

    1. Download and extrak the arcive, you will see DeskHtmlVersionToZero.exe and you have to make it to run on every time computer start, so follow next step.

    2. Copy DeskHtmlVersionToZero.exe to C:\WINDOWS\system32\

    3. Type regedit on StartMenu > RUN

    4. Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    5. Create String Key, give it name DeskHtmlVersionToZero

    6. Fill The Value with C:\WINDOWS\system32\DeskHtmlVersionToZero.exe

    7. Restart Computer.

    8. To Check it, type msconfig on StartMenu > RUN, goto startup tab, you will see DeskHtmlVersionToZero on your startup program.

    9. And Check that Your DeskHtmlVersion Keep in Zero Value.

Change the value of DeskHtmlVersion to zero instead of decimal 272.

After doing above change just refreshed & my problem of active desktop recovery got solved.
    Thanx.

I did what you said to do above, but the only files that came up in the search were “desktop” without the .htt

Is this what I’m looking for, or must it specifically be named “desktop.htt”

Please let me know as soon as possible as I need to get my desktop back.

    Thanks,
    Mary

1- take a copy of the file C:\WINDOWS\Web\SafeMode.htt and clear it
2 – go to the file C:\Documents and Settings\#username#\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt and change the background color

I’m on a school server and have very limited rights there. Is there a process that you have to kill or start that will end the Desktop Recovery forever?
    Thanks in advance.

I did the “regedit” process, and it worked great! However, after doing this, it made my Internet Explorer go offline. Now, of course I made sure the “Work Offline” option was NOT checked, and it wasn’t. Any ideas as to why it canceled my internet? I changed the values to ZERO, so I’m hoping that changing the background values did not mess up my Internet Explorer.

I was unable to find that file desktop.htt

I just replaced that with another users file which was working fine.

    This solved my problem.

To all those facing active desktop recovery problem, just follow this:

    Run, type and enter regedit
    Go to this key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\SafeMode\Components
Change the value of DeskHtmlVersion to zero instead of decimal 272.

    Hi

Having the problem of resetting the active desktop, I have followed the guideline below:

    Run, type and enter regedit
    Go to this key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\SafeMode\Components
Change the value of DeskHtmlVersion to zero instead of decimal 272.

But, I do not know how to change the value to zero instead of decimal 272.
    Could someone please help?

    Thanks, Aaron
